The Model That Addresses The Relationship Between An...

The model that I chose to investigate further is the conceptual model that addresses the relationship between an individual’s capabilities, health related printed materials, oral literacy and improved health outcomes (Parnell, 2015, p. 20). The defining attributes most commonly associated with health literacy are reading and numeracy skills, comprehending the written materials and the ability to determine what types of services needed and where to find them (Parnell, 2015, p. 19). Foreign-born individuals tend to have low health literacy and have even greater difficulty navigating the American health care system. They may have the following barriers that making utilizing the health care system more difficult, including inability to understand, speak or read English, have a lower education level, lack family support and lack of providers that speak their language. The first area to examine is the individual’s capacity to understand oral communications relating to their health concerns. I work in a medical day care center that has predominately Korean older adults. Some of the clients have limited ability to speak English and the rest do not understand any English. The clients rely on the bilingual Korean staff or the American staff to help them navigate the healthcare system. In order to help assure oral literacy with the health care providers our clients are limited to seeing doctors that speak Korean or have an interpreter present.
